Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas!!

I can't believe it has been May since I've posted, so much has happened since that time. Little Lauren is now 7 months old and so sweet. For the first time in a long time I've been able to get most of the Christmas presents finished, the ones I've wanted to make. Very little retail shopping this year and it feels so good. I'm so close to being done with a number of projects that have been on hold that I plan to keep on working after Christmas and get them all finished up. That's been my mantra this Christmas, get it done!! I'm finishing up each project - then move on to the next. Well, that's not entirely true but am reaching a point where I say OK, I'm going to finish this one, and have it done. I've only two more packages to get in the mail this week and all the presents for CA will be on the way. That's an accomplishment for me, having to work early enough to get things in the mail on time.

I hope every one has a wonderful Christmas and I'm looking forward to sharing more this coming year. I just saw my website expired two days ago, I didn't think about it so one more job to do in the next day or so :)

It seems like it was yesterday that I was the go-to computer person, but I must have looked away cause it's way past me now. I thought I'd get up to speed again by just continuing to work on it, but not sure that will ever happen. I've been working for two days already and don't think it's working correctly. I consolidated all three websites with my host, which is good -- but I'm having problems sorting things out. I've contacted support twice already so hate to do it again :) Guess I'll just keep plugging along.

It looks like the rains are over for awhile, but now the 90 degree temperature is going to bring more humidity than we've had in a long time. But, how the lawn and plants love it. Weeds too though, must be global warming but the chickweed is worse than I've ever seen it and threatening to take over the back yard.

Rain last night and woke to rain again this morning. The people in Joplin haven't had a full dry day since the tornado hit. So many helping out over there, amazing what is needed. Even though the big charities are there, things like flip-flops, flashlights (no electricity) ropes and needed right now....I'm sending money to a friend there who is involved in helping prepare and deliver hot meals to the families & workers. Little things we don't think about, like massage therapists being needed to give the workers some relief. The quilt guilds lost their homes and their stash of quilts for the needy, just when they're needed so are asking for supplies to quickly get more completed. They need everything, including boxes, it's almost impossible to imagine what you would need if you lost everything but the clothes you were wearing.

A time we should surely be counting our blessings.

First great-grandchild

This adorable little girl is my first great-grandchild, just a couple hours old. Lauren Antonia Flood, born yesterday May 25th. The only down side is they live in New York so I won't get to see her as often as I did her Daddy when he was a baby. She is perfect though a little small, surprising everyone by arriving a few weeks early. We're so thankful she she is OK and the two of them are now a family :)

I save my rose petals and lavendar flowers for potpourri each year. The jar on the right is a new one, made from last years flowers - the bowl on the left is a Rose/Herbal scent. I love to put sachets of this in the linen and clothes closets.

The roses are blooming!

These warm spring rains are causing everything to grow faster. One day there was a bud, the next day a rose, and yesterday we picked three gorgeous red roses - such fragrance! The Mr. Lincoln is my favorite as the petals are deep, dark, red and look and feel like velvet. They are the most fragrant of the ones we have.

A question for friends and customers, or anyone interested in sculpting and/or related subjects.

I have several projects in the works and would like to hear your ideas. Do you prefer an actual book, similar to Facial Reconstruction for Artists, where you follow along with the material? Do you prefer on-line classes, even if they are a little more expensive? Or, would you prefer Tutorials that are available for purchase on-line on an ongoing basis?

Are you interested only in Sculpting and/or Facial Reconstruction? Would you also like to see some tutorials on other types of art? ie, Fabric Arts, Sketching, China Painting -- Other?

Website Woes

Working with websites is one of those things that unless I use it often, I tend to forget it. When I was one of the individuals involved in the Federal Program to bring technology to the rural areas of the state, I learned just about everything there was to know about working with website and computers. I'll qualify that by adding -- what was being used at that time, 1996. For a number of years I stayed current till I got so busy I hired it done. When I decided to take over the website again, I found the world of technology had passed me by. I took a couple of summer classes at the university but it doesn't seem to stick :) I think maybe I'm going to need some help afterall to get it back into shape.

I love this, so simple and easy. This is a silk leaf but wouldn't it look nice with a real fall leaf?

Another idea, I tried to glue the stones on but they were a little heavy.

A sample of papercrete with rosemary sprig. Papercrete is a cross between paper mache and hypertufa. Made with concrete so it's very durable but also lightweight. I've been making planters for the garden but when I get another batch mixed up I want to try some garden sculptures.

I cannot believe it has been over a month since I've written here! Surely there are post demons hiding them. The 23rd was my first book signing and it went great. Was so much fun to talk to people, explain what I do and sell some books :) I put some pictures on facebook, but I'll add a few here also.

Good Intentions

I always have good intentions to keep up with my blog more often - but it just doesn't happen. The days go so fast, then the weeks and months. Last year at this time I was starting work on my book and missed most of the best time of the year. I've vowed not to let work keep me from enjoying life, our days our too short not to include leisure time and take part in things we enjoy. Even work we enjoy is still work.

This is my year of new beginnings, I love new beginnings. But sometimes instead of starting something new, a new beginning can look back and slow down and relax more. That's my goal this year. I've gotten further away from my artwork, what I've done is in bits and pieces. What happened to those long days just experimenting with different media? Where has the fun gone? I want to bring it back.

My granddaughters took us out for lunch today to celebrate my husbands birthday and our anniversary. A relaxing day to end a relaxing week. For the first time in a long time we've had the luxury of just relaxing and doing this and that as we pleased, including quite a few naps. An old friend coming by tomorrow afternoon to work on some jewelry her daughter is making to wear to the prom so we'll have fun catching up while we work.

Sunday Evening

Another overcast day with storms due in tonight. It's rare to have these gray days here, even in the coldest of winter the sun shines. On the plus side, it's toned down my spring fever and I've had a couple of relaxing days. Read a new mystery by Nora Robert and watched more TV than I have in months. I made some silk western bandanas and hand finished them with a rolled hem. It made me realize how much I enjoy hand work in the evenings and how much I'd missed it. So I got some work out and am finishing up a baby blanket I started quite awhile ago, it's crocheted in a popcorn stitch. Took me a couple of rows to get back into it but am enjoying it. I have a hard time getting interested in television shows and this allows me to listen but still keep my hands busy.

Talking to Strangers

Did your Mother tell you never to talk to strangers? Or maybe you told your own children that? There were good reasons we did, and do, teach our children to be safe and those haven't changed. But are you still avoiding speaking to someone you don't know - just because you haven't been introduced? If so, you may be missing a great part of life. What a boost to my day when someone says you have beautiful hair or some other compliment, just in passing. The sun shines a little brighter after that. Next time you admire someone or something, just step up and tell them so! You meet some great people.

As I've gotten older I find it much easier to approach a stranger to compliment her on her hair - or maybe ask a question. In Wal-Mart parking lot one evening I saw a beautiful tapestry purse sitting in the basket while the woman put her groceries in the car. I just made a passing comment on how much I liked it and she stopped to tell me she'd made it herself. So we talked and she told me how she devised the pattern and why she made it. I really enjoyed talking to her and when I got home I wished I'd thought to get her phone number - or given her mine - and she seemed like someone I'd like to know.

Along that line I met an attractive, funny and talented woman yesterday in the fabric store. I'd just run up to get something that was on sale and while I was waiting for a clerk a woman asked me a question about figuring yardage for drapes. Many years ago I taught drapery making so we laid her fabric out and had an enjoyable conversation about sewing, decorating, colors and laughed about how when we started out harvest gold and avocado green were in vogue. We got her yardage figured and she was inspired to upholster a chair to match.

I may never see her again, but I did give her my name and phone number. No matter what comes of it, it turned a boring errand into a fun hour. I came home and went back to hand rolling hems with a smile :) Do you have some "random acts of kindness" to share? I'd love to hear them.

Changing Hats

You all know how much I love to work with clay, and my passion for facial reconstruction but what you may not know is I have the same passion for fabric. The women in my family all do beautiful needlework, my grandmother won first place in the Texas State Fair. I'm of an age when little girls learned to sew and do needlework. It stood me in good stead over the years, I've used it much more than the other skills I learned during those years, like how to throw a spiral football pass :)

I'm putting together a new website that will have room for all my work. I love antique linens and enjoy using them to create something new. Working with fabric is very calming for me, there is something about the feel of the fabric, laces and ribbons that just feels good. I'll still work in clay and on reconstructions, the next book is already started and will be out later this year.

I was reading over the comments from the past few months, and I'd love to have you all over for a cup of tea and just visit. We have a lot in common. My herbs will be coming up very soon now, the roses are pruned and we plan to plant several new ones this year. I love the old ones, they have a wonderful fragrance. In fact, I have a bowl of rose pot-pourri on the coffee table and occasionally I catch the scent as I sit here working.

Now that I have more free time, I'd love to hear from all of you. What you've been doing and what you're working on..

End of August

Where does the summer go? Almost Labor Day and I'm not ready for fall. The heat wave is over and as it's cooled off the flowers are beginning to bloom again. Nice to have the roses back, I love to have a vase on my desk as I work - and - work I am!

Two more weeks till the surgeon releases me but I am using my hand more. I'm not sure how long the stiffness will be there but it's much better, I can actually type again. Not like normal but not the two-finger hunt and peck style either :)

Which means the book can progress and should be available in stores sometime in October. The Winter issue of Art Doll Quarterly will be out November 1st. If you are on the list for the first copies you'll be getting an e-mail by the end of September with ordering information.

Thanks again for hanging in there with me and for all the good thoughts you've sent my way. My husband used to have a sign in his office, Constant Change is here to stay! That's how I feel sometimes :) There are so many people involved in producing a book and so many little details I never thought about - it's been a real education for me.

Surgery successful

I had the surgery last month, the stitches came out Monday and everything looks good. Now it's just waiting for it to heal so I can begin to use it again. I am still hunt & peck typing with one hand and a couple fingers - so it's very slow. Thanks to all who have inquired and are still waiting for the book. Things should move quickly now.

Storm Damage

Wow! A brief, but strong, storm passed through last night and in a matter of minutes this is what was left of our beautiful Red Bud Tree. It lifted it from the ground and threw it about 10' into our driveway. Another tree in the front yard was split in two pieces, the same tree that had similar damage from lightening a few years ago. Took about two years for it to grow enough new branches to hide the damage. This is on the other side so will be interesting to see how it comes back.

Though there were a few tornado warning out, this was what they call "straight line" damage. Hurricane force winds that travel in a straight line rather than the swirl that signifys a tornado.

Still Out of Commission

Met with the hand surgeon this morning and he is scheduling surgery. I anticipate another 4-6 weeks of not being able to use my left hand. It's been a problem having it splinted but fortunately it isn't my right hand. It's a set back but could be worse :) My daughter-in-law will be in in a few weeks and will help me catch up.

The one on the left is made from a sturdy brown folder and the brown check is made from two decorative folders. Yes, Summer is Here!

I don't need a calendar, we skipped right to August weather. The lawn, plants, animals and me are all feeling stressed. Though we don't have extremely high temps here in MO the humidity makes up for it. I could say I'm feeling it more as I get older but I know the summers have been getting hotter. The day I got married it was 105 degrees,the hottest day of the year in CA in 1959. With no a/c the candles drooped in the candelabras :) When we left CA in 1996 114 wasn't unusual and when we were visiting in August of '08, 112 felt like we had driven into Hades. Today we stay cool in the summer and warm in the winter and if I had to make a choice, I'd still choose summer. I don't like to be cold.

The sunlight and warmth energizes me and makes me lazy at the same time. I want to be outside working in the yard and at the same time want to be inside working in the clay and being creative in some way. I have to admit though, I've been lax at both lately. A health problem has taken my energy and created a few problems resulting in unexpected delays. I realize how fortunate I am to be living in this time and have wonderful doctors - yet I get frustrated that I can no longer do everything I plan on doing. But this too shall pass and I look forward to being active again soon. Thanks to everyone who has sent good wishes, they do help.

Spring is almost over

Days - weeks - months! Time is flying by. Spring goes so fast, there is so much to do in such a short time. One of my first items is to check the garden. Which perennials are coming up and which ones need to be thinned or moved. Any bare spots? Make plans to fill them in. I always like to do a major spring cleaning, though I'm a little behind this year.

Only a few days till summer is officially here and a whole new list of things to be done. Projects waiting to be finished, new ones to be started, it's always so exciting to have these long summer days to work. I love the light that comes into my studio, always energizes me.

Yes, finally!! Publication date is getting closer and even though I'm tired it's an exciting process. Realized exactly how much I didn't know about writing a book - it always looked easier :)

Watch for the ads in Art Doll Quarterly and CDC, autographed copies will be available on the website and you can order it on-line.

This is a self-instructional guide, similar to the class but you can work on it when you have the time and take as long as you need. I've taken all new pictures and spent time on the drawings. Large 8.5 x 11" format. If you have any questions, just let me know.

I've had a question about the content, this is not a class to teach you forensic facial reconstruction but how to use some of the techniques of facial reconstruction to improve your own work. You can utilize the information in the book to improve your own sculpting - or it's also good material for anyone who draws and paints as the information on the skull, muscles and tissue depths is a good foundation for any type of art.

A beautiful Easter

Couldn't have been a nicer day to celebrate such a wonderous occasion. Church in the morning then a bar-b-que in the afternoon with my sister and her family. After things being turned upside down for so long it was wonderful to just relax, enjoy the day and not have to worry about anything :)

A New Year!

I've always loved new beginnings and get excited about starting something new. The first day of school; the first day of summer vacation; the first really brisk fall day; beginning a new art project and of course, the start of a new year.

I don't make formal resolutions but I do spend some time thinking about last year and what I'd like to do different this year. More time to concentrate on my art is right at the top. Often day-to-day life takes over and I get tired, frustrated and lose my momentum. I'm one of those people who need large blocks of quiet time to work and it seeems like every year I have less of it. So one plan is to have some smaller projects that are easily completed and keep my muse alive while I work on long range projects. If you've found something that works for you, share it with me.

I've come to terms with my kidney problems; learned what I need to do, what not to do and am able to move on. It's taken awhile, but I think I'm there :)

I really believe this year will be the best one yet, I'm looking forward to getting to know all of you better and sharing more of our work!

Christmas is Over

Christmas is over for another year, I just packed the few things I'd had out this year. We've been so busy with the house there wasn't time to do it right so most everything stayed in storage. Our Christmas was quiet but so nice and relaxing. Santa was very good to me this year :)

I love to start a new year so am anxious to get things cleaned up and ready to begin anew next week.

Another year older!

I turned another year older yesterday, it was a beautiful sunny day, 72 degrees. We celebrated by buying me a new digital camera -- I'm so in love with it!! I think it's smarter than I am but it's fun to be learning something new. The years go so fast I sometimes feel like I'm caught in space - just spinning - not making any headway. Here's my first attempt at painting "in" the picture - I've not yet learned to edit in the camera though.

Making progress! My dining room is a dining room again! Finally have everything that's going back to the studio - there. Items that will be stored in the garage are in boxes waiting to go out. Lots of empty boxes waiting to rearrange the shelves and cabinets in the garage so I can store my "not used every day but want to keep handy" items :) This will allow me to have more free working room in the studio and I can move things in and out depending on what I'm working on. Sculpting supplies in one area, painting supplies in another and space to store various projects I'm working on. Right now I have a mosaic in progress, a couple of sewing projects and a special memory project for my family. I like keeping things together so when I have some time I can just pull out the bin and everything I need to work is right there. The down side to that is having enough supplies to store several projects :) But at least I know where things are -- ie, I know my alcohol inks are with the spoon books I'm making for Christmas.

Finished a couple birthday gifts and ready to start on Christmas. I still have to finish the living room drapes but I'll try and work on both at the same time.

Rainy Sunday

Our wonderful Indian Summer seems to have come to an end. The rain started this afternoon and the temperature is dropping. It was nice though to be able to have the windows and doors open while we were painting. Now comes the fun part of painting a mural on one wall in the bedroom...I'll work on designing it while catching up on other things this next week.

The studio is ready to move back into - but where do I put all the stuff I took out? I want to keep it organized and uncluttered so I can find what I have when I want to use it. It's wonderful always having just that little item you need, but it's often buried under a stack of other little items waiting to be used. I started with fabric, several bins have gone to the attic and books were next. Three boxes to "go", not sure if I want to sell them or just donate them someplace. Another two boxes I'm not ready to get rid of yet that will stay in the garage. Those that I want to keep available on a daily basis have gone back onto the bookshelves, just in another room. My fingers are itching to get back to work, I'm so glad we got everything painted and cleaned but now I want to do something a little more creative.

My sculpting group has thinned out, several moved on to other pursuits. I miss our get-togethers, seeing what everyone is working on and feeling the vibes that come with a group of artists. I have several things scheduled that won't put as much pressure on my right hand, after many years of working in the clay arthritis has become a problem. To give it rest I have other outlets ready, a mosaic to finish, some needlework to frame and some will be made into pillows for gifts. A painting I promised last year, a scrapbook to finish for my granddaughter -- more than enough to keep me busy when it's too cold to be outside. Potted the last of my starts that I'll overwinter in the house so now it's just the cleanup before winter is here.

And, yes, I'm still working on the book (s).

We've had rain, cold and sunshine again, very strange weather this entire year but the sun is shining today. We're still working on the house - sorting as we go along. We move everything out, paint and then before we move it back we go through everything, choosing what to keep, what to give away and wondering why we ever kept "that"? It's such a good feeling but takes so long and seems like we're never going to finish.

I'm doing well, taking the winter off from teaching any classes to get things here in order and make it easier on my family. It's been a year now and I've gotten into the routine and it's become a normal way of life for me. Thanks for all your good thoughts.

The new website has been delayed but I am taking time to enjoy doing some things just for fun and will have new items to show once everything is back to normal. Hope everyone is sculpting, sewing, collaging or whatever make you happy!!

August Already

No matter how good my intentions I can't seem to keep up with more posts. This has been a busy summer, strange weather kept us on our toes. Storm damage the first of the year didn't seem that bad but took forever to get everything repaired -- mainly as there were so many homes in the area that needed work done. The final repairs in the house were done just recently and it's a good feeling to get all the construction & paint out of the house. Now I want to start the redecorating, it's been postponed so many times but most should be done before Christmas. We finally chose a wallpaper for the dining room but had trouble matching paint -- then found out the paper is backordered :) I'll keep the sheer drapes but make new swags and valances for just about every room.

The front part of the house will be completed first - and possibly my studio done while everything is still packed up. At least get it painted a lighter color. The kitchen is next on the list but that's a big job due to all the wallpaper that will have to come down and I don't want to have several rooms torn up at once. I love an elegant, formal look - this is a pretty traditional home - but ended up with more of a formal cottage look. Lots of greenery and colors to bring the outside in....we don't have good natural light in the living room so decided on a lighter version of the original sage color we had settled on. I planned to do the entry in the darker color but there isn't a good stopping place and don't want it in the hallway so not decided yet what I'll do. Thinking I'll use some of the darker elegant papers and fabrics in our bedroom and maybe the den...there are a couple I may just order to use for art projects :)

No classes scheduled -- too much going on in the house this year. My first grandson will be getting married in September. In NY, where he moved to be closer to his girlfriend. It doesn't look like we'll be able to go, it's one of those ... can't get there from here...things. Never thought I'd miss his wedding but then never thought about any of them moving so far away from the rest of the family :) That means rental cars, hotels etc.

The daffodils and forsythia look so springtime, yet the Ozarks are famous for strange weather patterns. The snow got the daffodils and we've had several freezes that have bit quite a few of the plants that were up. Beautiful yesterday and today but by tonight the storms will move back in for a week.

Almost There

When I get the busiest it seems like life has a way of keeping me in line. After spending the summer in web design classes, August in CA visiting our kids and grandkids, numerous flight delays, cancellations and way too much time spent waiting in airports we finally got back home. September and October I thought maybe I'd picked up a virus travelling but in November was diagnosed with kidney disease. Spent the holidays learning how to take care of myself and was feeling pretty good only to come down with some type of flu the end of January.

Now that I'm back on my feet, I'm ready for spring! We've had record warm weather and record cold, typical Missouri. A few snows, which I love and not much ice so all in all not a bad winter. Even though we had a light snow this morning the sun is shining and the plants know it's almost spring. The daffodils are up several inches, many herbs are also up and my hanging garden bells, which started as a 4" pot a couple of years ago have spread to cover and entire area this year. They will be beautiful when in bloom! Is it the times we live in or my age that keep me one step behind all the projects I have started? I'm hoping to get one completed each week this year and get caught up!

Our first real snow!

While the worst part of the storm hit a few miles south of us, closer to Branson and below, we did get our share of ice and snow along with some thunder snow the first night. I love this, I watched it as long as there was light and then took a picture after dark.

The days go by so fast and suddenly I remember I haven't posted recently and I see it's already been a few months since I've put up any information.

If you're waiting for the new classes I'll have the information up as soon as I can. A routine checkup in November found a medical problem that needs attention. Fall Color

In a matter of days this tree in the front yard has turned colors and shows the beautiful fall colors the Ozarks are famous for.

The flowers are all gone but our Indian Summer means the lawns still need to be mowed. Still picking fresh herbs but they know it's time to slow down and get ready for winter.

Photo Coasters
Tutorial

Supplies:
Color copy of photographs (toner copies from a copy center)
Acrylic Gel Medium (I use Golden Gel Medium)
4x4” tumbled tiles (You can find these at Lowes, Home Depot etc)
Foam brush
Sealer
Antiquing glaze if desired
Brayer
Cork backing (packages of 6 cork squares a can be found at Hobby Lobby, Michaels, etc)

Instructions:

Arrange your photos on a sheet of 8.5x11” paper; leaving enough room to cut them out while making use of all the space. Do any cropping and/or color correction before making your original working copy. The pictures will be reversed so use your software program (or the copy menu) to reverse your original. You can also soften the edges of the photos so they blend into the tiles better. Take this to your copy center and make a color copy (toner copy). Each copy can be used only once so you may need to make several copies. Cut around each picture to remove any white space and anything else you don’t want transferred.

Use the foam brush to apply a generous coat of the gel medium to the tile – I brush it on in one direction, then in the opposite direction - immediately place the picture face down on the tile. Use the brayer to smooth out the photo. Press firm enough to completely adhere the photo to the gel with no air bubbles but don’t press hard enough to squish all the medium out. Set it aside to dry overnight.

When completely dry, use a damp sponge to wet the back of the copy and keeping your fingers wet gently start rubbing the paper off the back. Work from the center out, wetting as necessary to keep peeling the outer layer of paper. As you being to see the image appear it will be very fragile, take care not to tear it at this point. This is a delicate process; too much pressure will rub holes in the photo. If it gets too wet or you’re having problems, set it aside to dry again and repeat the process. Do this as often as needed. Once you do a couple you’ll find the rhythm and pressure needed. If you do end up messing it up, scrub the tile clean and start over with a fresh photo copy. When you can see the entire image but there are still some “fuzzies” of paper you can use a damp sponge to get the rest of the paper fibers off.
Let dry and coat with a clear finish. I often do some antiquing at this point, rubbing it into the irregular edges of the tiles and then use a soft cloth to remove it from the face of the picture. You can also use this technique to disguise any places that didn’t come through perfect. You will occasionally find you’ve rubbed too hard in an area and removed some of the picture – depending on your picture this can be an advantage as it gives an antique, worn appearance to the photo. When you are satisfied, apply a second coat of finish and let dry.

Glue a cork square to the back and you have a finished coaster. If you can’t find the cork squares, you can use the foam craft sheets and cut them slightly smaller than your tile.
The same process can be used to make 6x6” decorative tiles. Simply buy the larger tumbled tiles, make a larger copy of your picture or a montage of pictures and proceed the same way. You can find 12x12 cork squares and cut these to the size needed for backing of larger tiles.

TIPS: You can scan your pictures into the computer and arrange them to fill the page and print it out or tape the original photos to the paper and take that to the copy shop. You’ll get better results if all the photos are of similar contrast. If you have a photo that is too dark or too light, make the corrections on your computer first or use the machine at the copy center.

If you want to enhance the colors or add a touch of color to a black and white photo, use thinned acrylic paint sparingly before using the sealer.

October Already!

Fall is always a busy season in the garden but the warm weather and rain are keeping theplants going. This Pineapple Sage is in full bloom it actually looks like the front, bright red, the sun is on the back. Always a beautiful sight here in late summer when things start winding down.

One of the small pocket gardens off the patio in the area I call the Forest Garden :) It's a fairly small area off the patio enclosed by a privacy fence. Impatiens, Angelina are still blooming andthe vine at the back. I'll have to look up the name again. It was just a little plant but has grown so big and the leaves are varigated colors of green, cream and a dark pink. I tried to start it in water this summer with no luck so want to cut it back hard and pot it up - try and overwinter it inside along with the Island Spice Rosemary.

The Toad Lilies have really spread this year and were in full bloom a little earlier. Still have quite a few blooms...I like to see these little blooms in and around all the greenery.

Fabric paper

I really like this piece of fabric paper and want to embellish it with fibers, bead and shells. It actually looks better turned up the other way :) The back is a great look too, oceany water-color feel to it. I may do another with just the paints to get the back.

Interesting "bugs"

This has been an unusual year weather-wise and we're seeing more and different insects. My husband brought in the yellow caterpillar, found him on a leaf eating holes in it. I don't think I've ever seen one like this.

The lower picture is an unusual cocoon. I saw it yesterday on the screen in the dining room. My first thought was a cocoon but then decided it was a twig from the evergreen outside the window. This morning the "twig" was at the top of the screen and walking sideways. The "barbs" are pointing down and at the head it has "pinchers" that open and 4 tiny legs. The pincher moves left, then the little legs scramble after it and the second pincher follows. Again, I don't remember ever seeing one like this nor do I know what either will become.

Prayer Pouches

Prayer Pouches I made for an exchange in Belle Papier. I wasn't sure when I started exactly what they were or how they were made so there are a few different techniques. Prayer Pouches are small pouches that hold a prayer for the individual. They are sealed and were worn as amulets to protect the wearer. I enjoyed making these so much I made extras to give to friends who are having a difficult time for some reason. My husband and granddaughter both wanted their own so made them one and put special prayers inside for each of them. Along with the prayers, I add some Lavender from my garden and Rosemary, for rememberence.

I'm making a new resolution! More pictures and more frequent postings!

Those of you who know me know I'm notorius for finishing a project, getting it packed and shipped - then once it's on the way I remember I forgot to take pictures. It's worse since we've moved to town as I have less space to store things and tend to give them away or sell them rather than storing them in my workroom. Even when I'm working on a class I get involved with the sculpting and a couple of times had to go back and redo a step to take the pictures.

So not only will I take and post more pictures I'll post more frequently. When I'm busy time flies and I don't realize it's been a week, or a month, since I've caught up with the blog.

I have one more week of working on the new website and getting the new classes up, some new, fun classes coming ----- meanwhile, I can look out the window here and see weeds growing and stretching just hoping I'll stay at the computer till they are firmly rooted!

It seems lately I'm always writing about how fast the time is going. The new year is no exception, I've so many new projects scheduled and trying to juggle those with my day-to-day responsibilites.

Two new on-line classes in addition to my class on Forensic Sculpting. They are Sculpting an African-American Woman followed by Sculpting an Asian -American Woman. I'll post the dates as soon as they're finalized.

Where are the days going?

I can't believe how fast the days, weeks and months are going this year. Looking back I can see what I've accomplished but it isn't close to what I'd hoped to accomplish. With every year I feel like the time to do the things I've always wanted to do is slipping away. I also find it harder to balance my desire for creative time against my responsibilities -- maybe it's the fact I have less energy these days. As the winter gets closer I'm wishing I had a winter home someplace where the sun is shining and the weather is warm.

Gosh, I can't believe I haven't written here for almost 3 months. Life has been a blur. August is always busy, lots of garden work and harvesting during the late summer. I went to a workshop the first part of September, came home on friday night - helped the judges with the gallery submissions Sat morning - tried to rest on Sunday as Hal had knee replacement at 5:30 on Monday morning :) Hadn't planned it all like this but that's how it came down.

I'll do a little catch-up and try to do better!

It's already Wednesday

Got out and walked very early this morning, before the sun was up as we have Heat Advisories now. The downside to being out so early is it's hard to come back in. I see so many things to do in the yard. You'd think it would be easier to spend my time working in the clay but I'm not finding that.

Here's a picture of the current sculpt, with the face cut off. I made the entire head smaller, changed the position some to match a picture I like. It will be harder to do though, especially if I add the wide smile -- but that's how she always looks. I should post that picture -- next time. I'm not too good at getting these pictures where I want them in a post. A note here, I'm going to teach an on-line class this fall using some of the techniques from forensic sculptors and one of those things will be teeth. There is so much more to the mouth and teeth than we think -- which ones show, where does the lip meet and so on.

I've rounded up a few old pictures so will post some the next time, nothing fantastic, just pictures. I'm notorius for forgetting to take pictures prior to sending out a piece. Sometimes I can get them later, sometimes not - usually the ones I wish I had :) Trying to do better these days, and take pictures in progress.

Dog Days of Summer!

I think we have officially reached them. Our first week of heat alerts plus a bumper crop of ragweed waiting to explode. It's the perfect time to stay inside and sculpt, yet I seem to have lost my energy for doing much of anything right now. I suspect part of it is the crowded situation of my workroom...too many things in progress. I probably need to finish something to get re-energized.

Had problems with my wireless this morning and it took 4 hours to get everything back in order. Not exactly the way to start the day :)

Back to square one

Ended up cutting the features off the new sculpt. I was pleased with the technical aspects but it looked stiff. I have angled the head and think I'll use a wider smile...no teeth, just a little more expression. She is leaving for Jamaica this coming week so doubt I'll get any face time soon, it makes such a difference in capturing expression.

Have been asked what the quarters were for. The human eyeball is about the size and shape of a quarter, so it's an easy gauge to check for depth at this point. I've also found the old eye sizers work good to get a round hole in the clay.

Hope to get more sculpting time in the next few weeks. Ragweed is ready to explode and I read this morning it's a bumper crop. I thought we had lots of weeds on the farm but all the vegetation in the area seems to be a goldmine for molds and other allergy causing problems. Won't be doing much yard work!

New Sculpt

Here are a few pictures of the new sculpt I'm working on, it's a lifesize, portrait bust.

You can see where I've added clay to reach the desired dimensions and placed dowels to mark where the ears will be.

Wooden blocks are used to firm and shape the clay mass. You want to get all the air pockets out of the clay as it will be fired. A profile view, here I'm using quarters to guage the depth of the eyeball.

A disadvantage of taking pictures in progress is I have to keep wiping the camera off :)

I know I keep saying it but time is going so fast this year! Busier than I've been in years. Still working with the Forensic Reconstruction and will be doing more in a few weeks. Writing lessons for an on-line class on using techniques from forensic sculptors to make your sculptures more realistic. Teaching on-line will be a first for me. I've always enjoy teaching but the time involved in weekly classes got to be too much. Weekend workshops are so nice as you can concentrate for hours at a time and I think the students really learn more with no other distractions. That said, I am teaching again though not a regular weekly class. We meet about every other week for several hours.

Have a few other items going also, all dealing with sculpture and/or art in general. What a good feeling to be able to concentrate on art again! No pictures to post today though I have taken several -- just need to get them onto the computer.

New Projects

Getting back in the groove. Got a head armature ready to start the new life-size bust of my granddaughter...last one was 1992, she was 9yrs old. Also started another item with wet clay, not sure what it's going to be but am starting with the feet up this time and thinking I'll end it at the waist...maybe a vase? Got the first foot and lower leg done today and am letting it firm up overnight, will do the second leg tomorrow. About 8" tall I think. Still don't have my kilns wired but hopefully we'll find time this month. These will have to dry good so time isn't a problem.

Summer's Here!

I can't believe how fast this year is going. After a crazy winter and spring we are finally into full summer. The sudden heat after our cool, rainy spell is hard on the plants so is taking more of our time keeping things up - plus getting a few last minute items in before July arrives.

Spent all day Wednesday making a plaster macquette of my granddaughter in preparation for doing a full sculpt of her. With her work schedule and a new house, she has precious little time to sit for me. This way I have something to check my measurements against when she's not around. Not the best solution but better than nothing.

I've been working on the forensic sculpt, tweaking a little here and there in the mornings while it's cool. Ideally, I could put it in the fridge to get good and cold to eliminate the stickiness but barely room in there for food! My husband came up with the idea of putting it in the ice chest along with our Blue Ice, which I did. Just checked and it's firm, though I'll probably add more ice tonight and keep it as cold as possible till the first of the week. Sounds like something from the Sopranos, keeping a head on ice :) The terra cotta sculpey is hard to photograph as you can't see the depth in it - but I've been experimenting with different macro settings on my digital. It's a good way to check as I will notice things I don't see working on it. The pictures from the digital camera aren't quite as sharp as with the SLR but the ease of working with it make it well worthwhile. Once I'm satisfied, I'll take some photos then take it apart. I'll post some photos when it's done.

Still Working

I have the layer of "skin" on my forensic sculpture and am at a standstill. I realize now why I should have purchased some new plasticine for this project rather than make do with the Sculpy I had on hand. The Sculpy is much too soft for this type of work. I'm still having a problem not using my hands on the clay, it's so instinctive to smooth a place with my thumbs, but that's not an option here. One reason is, by pushing the clay you also move the markers. The pegs are glued on but easily pushed over. I used a generic skull form and the measurements for a caucasion male -- and what I got was a generic male look :) The lower jaw is too short to accomodate these measurements and while I can add clay, it would lose the reality. It's hard not to let my fingers shape it the way I think it should be rather than how it actually was.

I have finally been able to start some Forensic Reconstruction models, these are just study models using the Peg Method, but what great fun. Harder than I'd anticipated -- you have to ignore your instinct to sculpt and follow the lines of the skull. There are charts to use which help in gauging the tissue depth of the different races & sex.

On the first one I used some Sculpy I had on hand rather than ordering new plasticine and it proved too soft for this purpose. I also used a foam skull I had on-hand rather than waiting for a study model to arrive. I didn't realize this problem till I was almost through and saw the anatomical differences created a problem. But has been great fun and I learned a lot. I'm looking forward to working more with this when time allows.
